Formed in 1976, the Design Institute for Emergency Relief Systems (DIERS) became a users group in 1985. It is now a consortium of 250 companies that are concerned in development of methods for the design of emergency relief systems to handle runaway reactions. Of particular interest to DIERS are the prediction of two-phase flow venting and the applicability of various sizing methods for two-phase vapor-liquid flashing flow, viscous flow, etc.

EDUG is the European DIERS Users' Group and the word DIERS stands for The Design Institute for Emergency Relief Systems. In other words, EDUG is a group of (mainly) Europeans who work on emergency relief system design using technology developed by DIERS. Members also carry out research in this field and are often involved in developing guidance and standards

The main goals of the International Group of Experts on the Explosion Risks of Unstable Substances (IGUS) are harmonization of the methods used for identification and quantitative assessment of the explosion risks of unstable substances, rating of thermal stability, reactivity and flammability of unstable and reactive substances. IGUS members devote considerable time to examining the different test methods to identify and improve upon the best methods that discriminate materials with explosive, flammable and oxidizing properties. IGUS consists of two working groups: - Energetic and Oxidising Substances (EOS), which is focused on test methods, classification and safety aspects related to organic peroxides, self-reactive substances and other energetic substances, fertilisers, ammonium nitrate and oxidisers; process hazards, particularly in relation to manufacturing; incidents involving energetic substances. - Explosives, Propellants and Pyrotechnics (EPP) which covers the area of explosive properties, general test methods and thermodynamic ratings, phenomenology of explosions, safety and regulatory aspects related to explosives, pyrotechnics and propellants.
